
Rachel Keller is a fictionalized character from The Ring movie series. The character, created by producer and writer Ehren Kruger, and played by Naomi Watts, serves as the protagonist of The Ring and The Ring Two, sharing similarities to Reiko Asakawa from the earlier Japanese films.Introduced in 2002's film, Rachel is an investigative journalist who has to find a way to escape death after having watched a video that was cursed that she discovered while investigating the murder of her niece. Rachel is required to dig into the past of Samara Morgan after her son becomes ill with a mysterious illness. Ruth asks Rachel Keller as an investigative journalist to discover the reason for Katie's death. Rachel is informed by Ruth, her sister, that she found Katie's disfigured body in the closet. Rachel also reveals that Katie died of an attack on her heart. Katie's friends tell Rachel about the myth surrounding the tape that was cursed and Katie's friend Becca was placed in an institution following Katie's tragic death. She also learns Katie's boyfriend as well as two of her friends all were killed in bizarre accidents the same night around 10 PM. Rachel is on her way from Shelter Mountain Inn to Cabin 12 where Katie and her friends watched the cursed videotape. Rachel is able to locate the tape and watches it, and then her phone rings. Rachel hears a voice utter "seven days". Rachel is seeking help from her former boyfriend Noah Clay, a video analyst. In the future, Rachel discovers that Aidan, her son with Noah has watched the tape at the same time that Noah calls her and assures her that he is convinced by her. Rachel investigates the tape for the lighthouse and finds it's located on Moesko Island. This was the residence of Anna Morgan, an evil horse breeder cursed to be on the cursed tape. After further investigation, Rachel discovers Anna had an adopted daughter, named Samara who had the power to burn disturbing images into the minds of people as well as animals and other objects. Rachel gets to know Anna's widower Richard, but he makes her leave after she starts to ask questions about Samara.
